FEATURED DANCER
TANIA GULEI
Tell us a little about yourself
Hi, my name is Tania and I am 21. I am originally from Ukraine and I moved to the Netherlands 5 years ago to pursue my engineering study. At the same time, I was busy dancing despite my busy university schedule and other responsibilities.
How long have you been dancing for?
I've started dancing since I was 6 years old. I have started with ballroom dancing, where I mostly danced tango, salsa, rumba, samba. However, when I turned 10 years old, the mother of my dance partner decided that dancing was not a right thing for her son. Eventually my partner quit dancing and started doing fighting sports and I just switched to hip hop and jazz funk, where I wasn't dependent on having a partner.
What styles of dance do you specialize in?
Right now I mostly specialize in hip hop style. I love to add some elements of afro, reggaetón or lady style into my choreography.
What made you want to start dancing?
Honestly, it was my farther who signed me up for my first dance class and I am thankful for it to him till nowadays. Right now dancing is a way for me to be creative and express my feelings and I can't imagine a single day without it.
What has been your greatest accomplishment on your dance career?
Organizing my own dance class in my city! I have always dreamed of teaching dance to other enthusiasts, so I was offering my skills to many dance studios in my area. I did not have much of teaching experience but I was trying hard. In reality everybody liked my passionate attitude but all dance studios wanted Bachelor of Arts diploma or Dance teacher diploma and what I had was my Engineering diploma.
But with all declines and no's, it motivated me more to reach my dream. It took me quite some time, but I found a nice and reasonably priced dance space to rent in a city center and few months ago I began with my own hip hop class for all levels. I am excited to tell that my class grows weekly and I am thankful for everybody who supports me along with it.
What has been your most memorable moment?
My first golden medal earned at the competition. It was amazing feeling to realize that you have earned it.
What has been your greatest challenge?
Approaching dancers and choreographers with "big names" in the dance industry and ask them for tips, advice and just trying to establish connection with them. I believe that knowing people in your industry is always a good thing and one should never be scared to come and ask for anything.
What advice would you give to other dancers?
Be consistent and try to find time to work on your dream daily. Even 15 minutes per day can change a lot. Reach your goals and do not listen to people who doubt in you, but also don't forget to be a human and stay humble.
